The Surf Life Saving Association of Wales is the largest volunteer organisation for ocean safety and rescue work in the Principality and a not – for – profit Registered Charity organisation. Twenty-six voluntary lifeguard clubs currently affiliate to SLSA Wales ranging from Barry in the east to Porthmawr in the west and Aberystwyth to the north.
Many of the established surf lifesaving clubs in Wales have been around since the mid sixties, but it was the guiding force of Commander Charles “Chick” Thompson, MBE that helped to form the Surf Lifesaving Association of Wales in 1969.
For many years SLSA Wales fell under the umbrella organisation SLSA GB, but after many years of poor communication, recrimination, and lack of control over its own organisation’s funding, it was decided to go alone. In January 1st 2009, SLSA Wales announced to its member clubs that it was agreed to become a self governing body for life saving in the principality.
It is of course the aim of SLSA Wales to maintain links with SLSA GB at every opportunity but also to promote and establish a first rate surf lifesaving presence in the principality.
